Interlibrary Loan

Library: Ain’t Got That Thang?

Not finding the item you want at the Library? Don’t feel like you have to go without! There are three solutions for patrons to choose from.

First, patrons may ask to borrow the item from another library at no cost. The Chariton Public Library participates in the Interlibrary Loan Program sponsored by the State Library of Iowa. Patrons may use their library card for this service to borrow books as well as DVDs and CDs. Items are delivered to the Chariton Public Library and staff will call the patron when their requested item has arrived. Checkout is one month. Patrons may have up to three Interlibrary Loans at a time. Items that are less than a year old are usually not available to lend out, as a home library wants to keep their new items for their own patrons. Second, patrons may use their Library cards to access BRIDGES, the consortium of 487 Iowa libraries managed by the State Library of Iowa. Offering free ebooks, audio books, and magazines, BRIDGES celebrated more than 2.4 million checkouts in 2022. “Digital content remains in huge demand with Iowa library patrons,” said Michael Scott, State Librarian. “Iowans appreciate the convenience of checking out library materials right from home.” Begin by going to bridges.overdrive.com . Select “Chariton Public Library” as your home library. Then, using your six digit Library card number, you may begin searching through thousands of items available to borrow without leaving home. This service works with nearly all digital devices, with easy to follow instructions for all platforms.

Third, patrons may request that an item be purchased to add to the Chariton Public Library’s collection. Staff will take purchase requests either at the counter or by phone. Making a purchase request does not guarantee that the Library will purchase the item, but if you are the first patron to request an item, and the Library decides to add it, you will be the first patron to check that item out.

All three of these options require the patron to have a Library card. If you do not have a  card, just come in with a photo i.d. and proof of current address to get your free Chariton Public Library card today.
